FAQs child counsellor psychologist Red Deer

Common questions about child counselling:

You’ve decided to reach out for help, to find support in Red Deer. It’s perfectly normal to feel some anxiety and have a ton of questions about what to expect from a social worker, psychologist, therapist or counsellor. I am here to help answer some typical questions about therapy and the counselling process.

What does individual child or teen therapy sessions look like?

Session structure and activity varies depending on the therapist and type of therapy chosen. Typically, the first appointment is all about getting to know you and your child, information about their struggles and agreeing on the goals for therapy (what will the therapist and your child work on and how will you know your child is ready to “graduate” from therapy). This is either done with both you and your child present, taking individual turns talking to the therapist or a combination.

Ongoing follow up sessions typically include a brief check-in with parents and then the session continues with just your child. What happens during the session will vary depending on the type of therapy being provided and this should be discussed with the therapist. Sessions could be talk-based or include expressive activities such as sandtray, art or play.

In-person and online counselling options are available and vary with each counsellor.

What is my role as a parent?

It is important that parents remain involved, especially with children. Although parents aren’t usually in the therapy session with their child or teen, it is important for parents to be coaches and cheerleaders in their child’s progress and growth between sessions. Parent communication and involvement supports the therapy process.

It is also important that parents actively ensure their teen is attending scheduled sessions (missed sessions usually result in being billed for the full session fee).

You may also want to attend parent support sessions. These sessions focus on how the you can best support your child’s issues. For example, it is important for parents of anxious children to understand anxiety and what is and is not helpful in managing difficult moments.

Is child therapy confidential?

When it comes to therapy with your teen, it is important that what they talk about in session remains confidential and not be shared with parents (see below for the accessions). A teen will not open up and receive full benefit if they are worried their therapist is just an informant for their parent.

It is also extremely important that a child know their therapy sessions will not be used in ways that was not agreed upon (eg. parents requesting therapy notes for custody/access hearings). If you want assessment or documentation for court purposes, please ensure your child’s counsellor offers that service and your child is aware that the information gathered if for that purpose.

Things that aren’t confidential:

  • By law, any concern of suspected child abuse or neglect must be reported to the appropriate authorities.

  • Concern that your child is at risk of suicide - parents will be notified. Authorities might also be notified depending on the urgency

  • Any intentions or plan to harm another person would be reported to the authorities and the victim warned (when possible).

  • Information that is subpoenaed by a court of law, or when required by federal or provincial laws, rules, policies, or regulations. (please ensure you are respecting your child’s confidentiality if you are trying to access their confidential information)

What’s the cost?

This varies, but typically, in Red Deer, you’ll find rates between $150-200 for a 45-50 minute session. Payment is due at the time of appointment.

Does the counsellor bill my insurance company for me?

This is a great question to ask your child’s counsellor. Before you begin any therapy, it is your responsibility to contact your insurance provider to confirm what professions (eg. Master Social Work, Psychologist etc) and how much is covered. This varies per plan and therapists usually don’t have access to this information. If your counsellor does not offer direct billing, they will provide you with a receipt for you to submit to your plan for reimbursement (as per your plans details).

How long will my kid be in therapy?

The issue and severity, how invested your child is in therapy and the type of therapy provided will influence this. Most therapists will set review points where you will collaboratively review your child’s goals and progress.

How often will they need to come?

Children and Teens attend weekly or bi-weekly sessions as discussed with the therapist. Ensuring regular, consistent appointments helps establish rapport and supports traction in addressing areas of concern.

What happens if my child can’t make their appointment?

Most therapists have a 24-48 hour cancellation policy. If you cancel late or do not show for your appointment, you may be billed a full session fee.
